Calling the People of the Book to the Truth of the Qur’an

In Surah al-Mā’idah (5:15–17), Allah addresses the People of the Book — the Jews and Christians. The Qur’an declares itself a light and guidance, uncovering what they had concealed of the truth and clarifying the straight path.

Christians in particular are warned against exaggeration in their belief about Jesus (ʿĪsā, peace be upon him). The Qur’an makes clear that he was a messenger of Allah, supported by the Spirit, but not divine. Those who claim that Allah is the Messiah, or that Allah is one of three, have fallen into serious error.

The verses emphasize that life and death are solely in the hands of Allah. Neither Jesus nor any prophet could claim divinity, for all were servants of the One True God.

Thus, the Qur’an calls the People of the Book to return to the pure faith of monotheism, to believe in Muhammad (peace be upon him), and to accept the final revelation that confirms the truth of all previous scriptures.
