In these verses from Sūrah al-Ḥujurāt, Allah sets forth timeless principles of human dignity. Believers are forbidden from mocking, insulting, or calling each other offensive names, as such behavior undermines respect and unity. Suspicion, backbiting, and ridicule are condemned, since they corrode trust within society.
Allah then reminds humanity of its shared origin: all people are created from a single male and female, and the diversity of nations and tribes is meant for recognition, not superiority. The true measure of honor is not wealth, race, or status, but piety (taqwā) — a sincere awareness of Allah and righteousness in conduct.
These verses highlight Islam’s vision of a community built on manners, mutual respect, and the elevation of character above all worldly distinctions.
